The weather is changing in Alberta. The sun is getting warmer, the days are getting longer, and the snow is finally starting to melt after a long winter.
Here at Simple Yard, we’re getting ready for all of our spring clean-ups. We’ll be out and about doing aerations, power raking, lawn care, and fertilizing. If you’ve ever wondered why a spring clean-up is beneficial for your yard, here are a few reasons:
1. Winter is hard on your lawn and grass
Winter brings a lot of things with it that can damage your grass: salt damage, thatch accumulation, and leftover leaves from autumn. A spring clean-up repairs this damage with aeration, power raking and fertilizing.
Aeration is the process of perforating the dirt with holes to allow water, air, and other nutrients to reach your grass’s roots. When these nutrients reach the roots, the roots have a chance to grow deeper and in turn, your lawn gets healthier and stronger.
Power raking is the process that removes thatch from your lawn. Thatch is a layer of dead grass tissue that is between the green part of your grass and the root system underneath. This layer can become too thick throughout the year and it can hinder your grass’s growth in the spring if not removed. Power raking is also a great option because while removing the thatch from your lawn, it also cleans up leftover leaves from the fall.
Having your lawn fertilized is the icing on the cake. Fertilizing ensures that all of the essential nutrients for a beautiful lawn can go straight to the grass’s roots now that your lawn has been aerated and de-thatched.
2. Grass has the best chance of healthy growth in the spring
The best time to have your lawn aerated is during the growing season when the grass is just starting to grow after a long winter. In the Calgary area, the growing season starts mid-April and continues on into May.
3. A spring clean-up makes your yard look amazing
After a long Albertan winter, there are not many things more satisfying than seeing your lawn clean, tidy, and prepared for optimal growth. Without a spring clean-up, your grass will have a harder time reaching its growth potential, piles of leaves and debris can hinder your grass’s growth, and your grass’s roots won’t be able to absorb the important nutrients without aeration and fertilizing.
